Paper 5

Research Paper (Extended Literary Analysis)

Using your last paper (paper 4), you are to write an extended analysis that presents a more in-depth, critical understanding of your thesis, referring to the viewpoints of important critics either to support your main ideas or to offer alternative interpretations.  An effective extended analysis synthesizes information from multiple sources into a thoughtful, unified essay.  Use the guidelines below and the model that follows to help you develop your writing (Write for College 267).

            General Guidelines:

1.      Length: 5-7 pages (not including the Works-Cited page)

2.      3-4 Sources from your research

3.      Create a Works-Cited page for your secondary sources and your primary text.  (See our Website)

4.      Use In-Text Citations (See our Website)

Writing Guide:

1.      Revise and rewrite your Paper 4 using secondary sources from your research.

2.      Shape your first draft according to your planning and organizing.  Develop each main point in as much detail as possible, working in direct references to the primary text (the short story you wrote over for paper 4) and to your secondary sources (articles from your research) when appropriate. Refer to “Using Quotations” handout on the website.

In conclusion, for success in writing this paper, you will need to rely upon our class website in the research and documentation of your paper.  Therefore, we will take some class time to learn “how” to use these online resources.  For instance, we will utilize Diana Hacker’s website on MLA Documentation and the databases EBSCO and LION for your research.  (By the way, the UserIDs and Passwords for these two databases are “nwtarkcc” and “success” respectively).  Strive to do your best on this paper. In many ways, this will give you a small taste for what to expect next year if you decide to take Step-Ahead English (Freshman Composition).
