PTF Kickoff Brunch

Please note a change in our June Newsletter, the PTF Kickoff Brunch is scheduled for August 19th after your children are dropped off at school.  Maps will be provided to the home of Callie Whaley on Orientation Day and again the first day of school.  This is an excellent opportunity to meet other moms and to get acquainted with our parent/teacher organization.  This year the meetings will be held on Tuesdays, just before the women’s ministry Bible studies.  I hope this time change will enable more parents to come and participate.

Big Changes

  • Chapel will move from Tuesdays to Thursdays next year.  Which means everyone who has already received a dress code sheet should note that Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday dress will be the solid polo and jeans/khakis.  On Thursday, students will need to have the chapel shirt from Bella’s and khaki pants, shorts, or skirts.
  • Updates in the nurse’s office and elementary office will allow us to serve you better.  These adjustments should be completed in June.
  • We are working diligently to update the elementary computer lab.  Along with individual gifts, long-range planning, and PTF funds ($8000), new computers, tables, and redesign of the computer lab should be completed by August.
  • The ability to blog on the new website will be something you will want to check or have updates sent to your email account.  We will send paper newsletters, but we would love to begin sending them via email to save paper costs.  The calendar will be updated on the website as well.

New additions to the Elementary Staff

We were honored to work with Mrs. Cindy Harju, Mrs. Mary Sanders, and Mrs. Gina Bell over the past several years.  Each of these ladies has left their positions while making a significant impact on our students, for which, we are grateful.

God has brought the following staff to us.  Mrs. Leslie Fett will assume responsibilities in the nurse station.  Mrs. Kristy Cox will teach in the computer lab.  Mrs. Kim Darr, who previously taught 3rd grade, will direct music.  We are excited about the call of God to ministry for each of these ladies.  In addition, we have a bumper crop of K4 students.  Mrs. Melissa Brunton will teach part-time in the K4/3-day program.  Please pray for these ladies as they begin their new assignments.  (John 15:5)

Collections of Boxtops, Tyson labels, plastic bags, and ink cartridges

Continue to save the items listed above.  Walmart plastic bag recycling will not begin until the middle of September, but we can start off with a bang if you have a place in your garage to collect until then.  The success of our labels and recyclables would not be the same without you.

Enclosures

Enclosed with this newsletter is a school supply list.  School supply lists will be available at the website shilohsaints.org.  New families (1st-5th) and parents of first graders, remember you will need to purchase the classroom NHCS Bible (I-58640-074-6) which is available through the Lifeway Christian Bookstores.  Our Bibles are burgundy.

Parents of K5 students, you will need to provide a mat for naptime.  If you were with us in K4, you may use the previous mat.  If the K4 mat is not in good condition or you are new to our program, please pick up a VINYL kindergarten mat at Walmart.

Books to Read

All of my life, summer has been a time for reading.  As a child, I visited the library so often the librarian knew my name.  As an adult, I love visiting book stores.  I want my elementary students to know you never quit reading and learning.  There is great joy in opening a book to listen to another person’s ideas, thoughts, and opinions.  I thought this year I would post on this blog some of my favorite books.  Thus far this summer, I’ve read several books, but one book has really encouraged me as a parent.

Boundaries: When to say yes, How to say no by Dr. John Townsend reminds us as parents why boundaries are so important to the growth and development of our children.  One chapter is devoted to the idea of connecting with other parents, so you can draw strength as you walk through the tough teenage years.  Don’t skip the first section, so you look only at your child’s problem.  Start with the beginning and look at yourself as a parent first.  (Psalm 139:23)
