Senior Summer Series: Part Two - Ivy League Programs

August 30th, 2018

 Final Ivy League

Two Shiloh seniors are considering Ivy League schools.

This summer Kate Turpin and Meg Rogers attended immersive, residential summer programs to give them a taste of academic life at this level.

Kate Turpin attended the Secondary School Program at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, a 7-week experience from June 23 – Aug 1.  Kate was fully immersed in college life—balancing time between classes, homework, and extracurricular activities.  She studied Foundations of Neuroscience and World Literature alongside undergraduate and graduate level students who currently attend Harvard.  She lived in a dormitory on campus and spent her free time studying and going on excursions around Boston.  Her most memorable experiences include visiting Martha’s Vineyard and watching fireworks at the harbor.  Kate earned 8 hours of college credit by passing her courses and gained invaluable life experience that will prepare her for college life at any school.  She says the course in Neuroscience helped to establish her interest in becoming a pharmacist.  Her top choices for college in the Fall are the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, or Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.

Meg Rogers attended a one-week course in June at Brown University in a program called, “Summer@Brown.” Meg took a course called, “Putting Yourself into Words – Exploring Fiction and Non-Fiction Prose.”  She lived on campus in a dorm, and outside of her coursework, she was able to explore the city of Providence and socialize with a Christian student group.  She was able to balance a typical college schedule and the freedom it provides.  Meg has been interested in schools who have the top writing programs in the nation.  She was accepted into the summer programs at Brown and Georgetown but chose Brown because of the incredible writing department there.  Her top two choices include her family alma mater, the University of Texas in Austin, and now, based on her experience this summer, Brown University.  She is in the formal application process for both schools.
