What is the one thing you'll do whatever it takes to get?

For me, it’s an afternoon cup of coffee. Around 12:30 every day, the coffee alarm in my brain starts to go off, and I begin thinking of every scenario that will ensure I can consume a cup of coffee before 6th period starts. Coffee is the one thing I don’t want to go without.

Am I addicted? No, of course not. I can stop anytime I want!

In Psalm 27, we’re introduced to the idea of another one thingGod and His Presence. But not only do we see a compelling vision of God, we're also encouraged to chase after that one thing with all we've got.

“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.”

—Psalm 27:4 ESV

In Psalm 27, David has come to the end of himself and is desperate for one thing: God’s presence.

He's realized there's nothing else that will satisfy him, nothing else that will be enough, and nothing else worth chasing after. More of God is the one thing He's asking for and the one thing he’s seeking after.

The theme for chapel this semester is One Thing. When we enter the room every Tuesday our goal is to seek one thing--God’s presence. We’ll ask Him for it, we’ll look for it, and we’ll do whatever it takes to experience all that God wants to give us.

Even though this goal is a great and holy goal we need to understand something very important: this is hard work.

It’s hard work, but it’s worth it work. Hebrews says it this way:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

—Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV

We have nothing to lose. If we’re going to look to Jesus and seek after Him with all we’ve got, we must lay aside every weight and sin that clings closely. This will guide our efforts and focus every Tuesday.

Why? Because to miss God would mean to miss the only one thing we were made for.
