Weekly Words with Brandon Moore: When was the last time you had a “God-moment”?

January 26th, 2026

On Tuesday, we had the opportunity to hear testimonies from 10 of our Seniors. Each of them described two major themes in their lives: Their God moments and their faith response to those moments.

I think about the Rich Young Man that we see in Matthew 19. He encounters Jesus. He’s presented an opportunity to enter into the Kingdom of God. He has a God-moment. Yet he doesn’t respond in faith and walks away saddened.

Some of us have that story.

Many of us have the opposite story, though.

We’re like Moses. We were going about our normal, everyday lives, when God showed up and decided to change everything about our future. We said “yes” and it’s impacted the last decade for ourselves, our families, and the type of work we do.

The Bible is full of people who have “God-moments.” So my question is simple: when is the last time you had a God-moment?

Right away, I’m sensing through the screen that your body is tensing up. I’ve heard far too many people say, “I never hear from God!” or “How do I know when He’s speaking to me? Does He even speak to me?” I’m confident that many of us are very un-confident when it comes to hearing God’s voice.

How can we have a God-moment when we don’t think God is speaking to us?

Let me help you out by using a trail of logic. Here are a few ideas to consider:

  1. You are a sinner, and there’s nothing good in you.

  2. God is holy and perfect, and He is all good.

  3. James Chapter 1 says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…”

There’s something profound that we can realize if all three of those statements are true–and they are. It’s this: If you have any good thought at all, it means God is speaking to you.

If you remember a Bible verse, it’s God reminding you.

If you obey a commandment instead of sinning, it’s God giving you direction.

If you have a great idea that saves your company a substantial amount of money, it’s God giving you that idea.

Everything good in you is actually a product of God’s grace in your life. As you're navigating your life, if anything good comes to mind or simply happens, it’s because God is speaking to you and directing you in that way.

Now, hopefully, for many of you, all of that means that right now light bulbs are going off. You’re recognizing that you actually have had some God-moments recently.

Have you loved your spouse well today and encouraged them? That’s God speaking through you.

Have you understood a passage of scripture? That’s God giving you understanding and speaking clarity to you.

Have you poured courage into your kids? That’s God speaking through you, to them.

Many times we accuse God of not speaking to us because we are unintentionally trying to take credit for His work. Everything good comes from Him, not us. We are helpless before Him and need more grace from Him than we can imagine.

Here’s a few tips. Ask God a few questions:

  1. “When was the last time You did something good in me that I unintentionally took credit for?”

  2. “When was the last time You spoke to me but I didn’t recognize your voice?”

  3. “Will You make it unavoidably obvious for me next time you speak to me?”

God is speaking. He’s inviting us into moments. He can also help us get so familiar with His voice that there are less moments we miss.

God moments aren’t created by our own good deeds. They are created when we recognize our own great need before Him.
